About Kaladhungi

The quaint little town of Kaladhungi in Choti Haldwani region at the foothills of Himalayas has a special significance. Jim Corbett, the famous hunter cum conservationist transformed this village into an ecological friendly village. The town is situated at a distance of 26 kilometers from Haldwani in Nainital district of Uttarakhand on Haldwani-Ramnagar road. Kaladhungi town is located very close to Corbett National Park in Ramnagar of Uttarakhand. With the gigantic mountains in the backdrop and lush green fields flanked by dense forests; Kaladhungi is a paradise for a nature lover as well as a natural habitat for several species of flora and fauna in the region.

History of Kaladhungi

Kaladhungi derives its name from Dunga or black stone or proportion of iron found in the stone which is abundant in the region. The region was once a popular iron foundry factory which was made from forest charcoal and iron ore found in Kaladhungi and surrounding regions.

Corbett lived barely 2 kilometers away from Kaladhungi in Choti Haldwani and had a very emotional anchor attached to the village.

Geography of Kaladhungi

Kaladhungi is located at an angle of 29.28° N and 79.35° E with an altitude measuring 393 meters above sea level. The region is very fertile and a renowned commercial centre thriving on agriculture with fruits/vegetables available in great quantities; namely Litchi, Papaya, Banana, Guava, Mangoes, Potato, Cauliflower, Tomato, Cabbage, Beans, Brinjal, Peas, Gourd, Bitter Gourd, Ginger, Turmeric, Fenugreek, Spinach, Maize, Sugarcane, Gram, Pulses, Wheat, Rice etc.

Tourism in Kaladhungi

Kaladhungi has been immortalized due to the stark presence of hunter and conservationist Sir Jim Corbett who lived very close to the village. In his memory a village eco trail has been created in Kaladhungi that stretches almost several kilometers through the forestland at the foothills of the Himalayas in the plains. Choti Haldwani where Jim Corbett uses to stay is a thrilling place to pursue several activities like bird watching and listening to the chirping melody of several avian species, trailing pug marks left by tigers inside the eco trail, tracking deers’; it’s once in a lifetime opportunity. The trail continues up to 2 hours in duration spanning 3.5 kilometers.

The Heritage Trail is conducted and supervised by village folks and expert commentators who shed light about Corbett’s experience, adventures and contribution to develop this village in the Kumaon range.

While meandering through the Saal and Teak forest covered in dense greenery, look out for spotted deer, wild boar, pythons, leopards, tigers, elephants, barking deers, sambhar deers and several species of flora and fauna which inhabit here. There are home stays within Corbett eco village where tourists can interact with villagers, get to know about their lifestyle.

Interested tourists can also participate in conservationist and volunteering activities, attend cooking workshops, listen to Kumaoni folk music, cultural exchanges and embark on forest and heritage trails during their stay in the eco village.

Also make it a point to visit Jim Corbett’s house now transformed into Jim Corbett Museum enroute Nainital off Kaladhungi-Ramnagar road. The two graves of Corbett’s dogs within the museum premises are also noteworthy.

Corbett Falls in Ramnagar at a distance of 32 kilometers from Kaladhungi and Jim Corbett National Park are also highly recommended for tourists on a trip to Kaladhungi.

Best Time to Visit Kaladhungi

The ideal time to visit Kaladhungi is between February - June in summer months and October- February in winter months. The summers are hot and dry whereas the winter months are pleasant and very cold.

How to Reach Kaladhungi

The nearest airport to Kaladhungi is 22 kilometers away at Pantnagar in Udham Singh Nagar district while Haldwani railway station is the closest railhead to Kaladhungi at a distance of 26 kilometers connecting all major cities like Delhi, Lucknow and Mumbai etc.
